What are ways to figure out what to cook for dinner

Great question — this is where a lot of home cooks get stuck. Here are the moves that actually work: Start with what you have. Open your fridge and pantry, and build *around* one protein or vegetable that's already there and needs eating. This saves money, reduces waste, and honestly makes dinner faster. If you have chicken thighs and an onion, you're halfway to a meal. Think in shapes, not recipes. Instead of "what recipe should I make?" ask "do I want a one-pan thing, a pasta, a grain bowl, or a soup tonight?" Your mood and energy usually point you toward the *shape* of dinner before the specific dish. A weeknight after work? One-pan wins. Weekend and you have time? Soup or braise. This narrows your choices fast. Build a tiny list of anchors. Pick 3–4 dinners you can make on autopilot (roasted chicken with vegetables, a simple pasta, tacos, sheet-pan fish). When you're stuck, you're just rotating through those. It takes the decision-making burden off. Check what's expiring soonest. Give your fridge a quick scan — herbs wilting? Vegetables getting soft? That's your dinner hint. The kitchen is telling you what to cook. Does one of these resonate with you, or are you stuck at a different point — like *how* to figure out what flavors go together once you pick your ingredients?
